So tomorrow the 2015 Ironman World Championships kicks off. I thought I’d take the time to have a look at Damien Collins’ SRAM Red22 equip Cervelo P5 race ready for the demanding Kona course.
This isn’t exactly an off the shelf Cervelo P5 with a few interesting customising touches build up by Cycle Zone Mooloolaba.
There’s a few interesting things going on up front.
R2C shifters and a mechanical groupset has been chosen over the new electronic groupset for reliability, faster shifting and a more positive engagement.
One aero extension has grip tape while the other is raw carbon (this was a personal preference not accident) extensions of choice were the Profile Design T4+ with a Garmin 510 up front to capture data.
Despite the new BTA aero bottles he’s still running the very aero but simple Profile Design HC Aero Bottle with a Camblebak straw cut off on the tip.
The comfy CeeGee elbow pads with an interesting custom bracket to hold his Salt Sticks directly behind them. This keeps them hidden from the wind but still very easily accessible. The container is just a Nuun canister with the sticker pealed off.
Another angle of the front end.
A Specialized Remora Bento box integrates the stem to the frame nice and neat.
Only 1 x 10mm spacer combined with the Cervelo low bar. This set-up was adjusted a couple times at Custom Bike Fit Maroochydore and was very low and aero while still allowing the hips to stay open and back angle low enough but not too low.
The Clean front end of a P5
Riding to power is the only way Damo trains & races.
A Quarq Elsa R coupled with a 55t SRAM aero chainring with Look Aero Blade pedals will keep Damo from spinning out bombing down Hawi & floating down the Queen-K with a strong tailwind.
Back end of the drive-chain
A SRAM Berner derailleur with oversized pulleys and a Ceramic Speed UFO chain.
Custom Kona Zipp Decals
Zipp has done some special limited edition Kona decals for the 2015 Ironman World Championships. They’re super subtle but add a nice unique touch to the Zipp 808 Firecrest hoops.
He’s also chosen to run clinchers with latex tubes and Maxxis Relix tyres.
What to do when you can’t buy a product you like? Make it
A specialized Sitero saddle with a custom double bottle cage holder and a slimline saddle bag that slides right through the middle holding 2 x tubes, Co2 inflater and tyre levers.
Damien will be using his custom blend Infinit Nutrition on race day. This way he can get in up to 500-600 calories per hour entirely from liquid in the early stages of the bike.
The very limited edition colour scheme.
Damo’s race ready repping the Fusion Multisport Speed Suit.
He’ll be wearing the Fusion Multisport Speed Suit, (link for review below) Asics Hyper Speed 6 racing flats and Adidas Eye-were sunnies curtisy Allez Sport Mooloolaba
